If teeth have been
lost, then replacement options include implants,
dentures, and fixed bridges.
A bridge may
be used to fill a gap of up to four teeth if there are healthy,
natural teeth flanking the gap.
A fixed bridge is
an appliance made of porcelain or similar material to replace
missing teeth in the most natural way possible. This procedure
usually takes from two to three appointments to complete and
is very similar to having a crown placed
on a tooth.
The dentist will
prepare the two teeth on either side of the gap by removing
a portion of the enamel and dentin.
Since the bridge
must be carefully constructed to match the opposing tooth and
ensure a correct bite, several impressions of the teeth are
taken and sent to a lab which will construct the bridge.
Temporary crowns will be placed to protect the exposed teeth
until the next appointment.
At the second visit,
the dentist will fit the bridge over the old tooth; and cement
the bridge into place.
If the fixed bridge
is well constructed, it should appear entirely natural, and
restore function to the area.
